Glass Negative

Swan at Arnold's Neck, Warwick, RI. This was taken using a Graflex SLR ( 4x5 ) camera, vintage optics and a hand coated glass plate. I coat my own glass, metal and paper with photographic emulsion, as they did in the 1800s to help me get a look that is impossible to recreate with modern tools.

i have been a freelance photographer since about 1988, shooting everything from weddings to portraits to site architecture / documentation. while i have and use digital cameras, i would rather my initial image be created using traditional materials. i use film and paper and glass and metal as negatives. i coat things myself with emulsion. in addition to silver based images, i also make iron based ones, called cyanotypes.
