Food is part of everybody’s memories, culture, and everyday lives.
Toys by their miniature nature create a different perspective, drawing us into another point of view. Toys are also our connection to popular culture. Using toys and food I construct worlds that may seem strangely familiar; but upon further examination, reveal unexpected scenarios. Blurring the lines of reality by altering the scale of people, food, and landscapes i create a fresh view of our world. – M.Carden
Matthew Carden is a San Francisco based artist widely known as a pioneer in miniature and toy photography. He has gained both critical and commercial recognition, and is frequently called on by clients such as LucasFilm, HotWheels, and LEGO for custom projects integrating food and toys.
Matthew combines food with tiny figures to create a fresh and fantastical perspective on our real world, drawing the viewer in deeper for a moment to reflect on the rich tapestry food weaves through our lives. His playful and creative scenes evoke the incredible richness, texture and history of food in our culture in a contemporary way.
Growing up in LA in the 70’s and 80’s, Matthew was fed a hearty diet of toys, theme parks, museums, TV and movies, and his work is often themed around popular American culture of that era. At an early age, Matthew followed his passion, developing his ability to capture this imaginative and colorful world in photography. He attended the prestigious San Francisco Art Institute, and soon thereafter opened the first dedicated digital photography studio in the San Francisco Bay Area.
For over 20 years, Matthew has exhibited his work, while at the same time running an award winning food photography studio with his wife, a Chef and Author. Together, they also own and operate a successful gallery - Super Fresh Food Art Gallery - The world’s first gallery dedicated to art about food.
Matthew’s work can currently be found on exhibit in galleries and private collections internationally
